Interlude

Cade Foster stood outside the trailer that had become his only home, trying to get a handle on his emotions. It seemed like his battle with the Gua was intensifying. Each battle he fought was more difficult than the last. Each experiment more horrific. It was getting to be harder to deal with the aftermath of every man, woman and...child that he saw damaged by the aliens.

With a sigh Cade pulled open the door and stepped inside. Eddie turned away from his computer to look at him as he entered.

"Hey Foster. I was beginning to freak out here, man. Where've you been?" he asked as he leaned back in his chair.

"Nowhere Eddie. I just had some thinking to do." Cade sat down on the small couch and leaned his head back against the wall of the trailer, closing his eyes. He could almost feel his friend's concerned gaze but couldn't bring himself to appease Eddie's worry.

"Are you okay? You're not hurt or anything?"

The couch dipped and Cade knew that his friend had taken a seat beside him. "I'm not hurt or anything. I'm just tired I guess." He pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes, hoping to push back the fatigue. They still had a lot to do. There were good men out there somewhere being used by the Gua and there was no one who could help them but he and Eddie. There was no time for his frailty. Cade jumped as he felt a hand on his shoulder. He opened his eyes and found his friend staring at him.

"What can I do?" Eddie asked seriously, his characteristic flippancy gone.

"Do you ever wonder what we're doing Eddie? Sometimes it just seems so pointless. It doesn't matter how many times we stop the Gua from one of their experiments, there's always another one the next day, more horrible than the last."

"Hey, man, don't talk like that. Think of all the people that wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for what you've done. You are *the one* my friend. The things that you've done are amazing. I know that you don't really like to hear it but you are the man who's going to bring down the Gua, you are the man in the prophesy. If I didn't really believe that in the beginning...I do now. I've seen what you've accomplished over the last couple of years. No other man could have done what you've done--you're amazing."

Cade blinked over at his friend, surprised by the outpouring of emotion. "What we've done," he said softly.

Eddie grinned. "Hey man, this is your show all the way. I'm just your faithful sidekick."

Faithful. Cade almost smiled. Eddie was definitely that. Without the other man he could never have helped as many people as he had. Hell, he probably would have been dead by now. "More than that, Eddie. Much more than that. I once told you that you were the only person in the world that I trusted...that I needed you." The last words came out harder, saying them to his friend's face rather than over the phone. "Well, I do. More than you realize."

Eddie stared back at him, not moving his hand from Cade's shoulder. "Whatever you need, buddy. *Anything* you need."

Cade's eyes widened at his friend's tone of voice. He searched his face, to make sure he wasn't misunderstanding what was being offered here. Eddie's eyes were dark and serious, the hand on his shoulder tightened. Cade decided to ask for what he really needed and trust in his friendship with Eddie…trust that even if he had read the situation completely wrong, that Eddie would forgive him.

"I need to remember what I'm fighting for. I need to feel connected to life. I need to feel close to someone again--no not just someone…someone I care deeply for. Can you do *that* for me, Eddie?"

Eddie slid his hand from Cade's shoulder, down to his waist, then slid his hand between Cade's back and the couch. "Com'mere," he ordered. Cade leaned forward and let Eddie slide his arm completely around him, and found himself held in a tight embrace, against his friend's chest.

"I can do that, Cade," he whispered, using his friend's first name for a change. "Tell me what to do."

Foster leaned his head back and looked up at Eddie. "Give me permission to forget all about the Gua--all about death and my duty--just for a little while. Kiss me?" Cade winced at the needy tremor in his own voice.

"I'll do anything for you," Eddie said in an equally hushed voice, before lowering his head and touching his lips to Cade's in a first kiss.

It wasn't much, but with a life like ours it couldn't be. Just a brief touch, Eddie's lips against mine, and we were off again, running for our lives. It was a promise, hope, a reason to keep fighting. Twice-blessed indeed.

Orgasm tore through me, straight down my spine and blasting out of my dick. He swallowed. I think, of all the things that happened tonight, that surprised me the most. He finally pulled away and looked up at me.

"So, 'honey', was it good for you?"

Eddie's smile made me glad I was lying down. My knees wouldn't have supported me had I been standing.

Cade squinted his eyes as he looked out across the desert in front of them. Heat shimmered up in waves, making the cactus and brush appear to be standing in water. They had chosen this spot for its desolation, and there was no doubt about it; it was desolate. The banging of the trailer door caught Cade's attention and he turned.

"Foster, get your ass over here and help me," Eddie bitched, staggering under the load of several bags of groceries.

Smiling, Cade swiftly moved to help. A few minutes later, groceries put in all of their proper spots, Cade and Eddie sat at the table snacking on melon.

"So..." Cade started, not really having anything in mind to say, but wanting to break the silence.

"So," Eddie glanced at him. "We're here for about a week. Just downtime mostly."

"Ah."

Silence fell again and remained undisturbed as the sun slowly painted the sky red outside. As day faded to night, Cade and Eddie began their nightly routine. It struck Cade how comfortable he was, how utterly at home he felt with Eddie. Other thoughts, further realizations, pushed at his awareness. The low lamplight cast an almost unearthly glow around Eddie and Cade's breath caught in his throat.

"Eddie?" Cade walked over to his friend, stopping when Eddie looked up at him. They were so close now that Cade could smell him, smell that unique scent that was Eddie.

"Yeah?"

Cade took a deep breath and slowly let it out, staring intently into Eddie's eyes. He could be wrong, this could be a mistake, but it felt too right to just let it go. Reaching out one hand, Cade gently touched Eddie's face. Eddie's eyes widened and he started to pull back for a split second, but then he relaxed into the touch.

"I..." Cade said. "I feel home. Here. With you."

Eddie's face broke into a brilliant smile. "Same here, Cade." And then he leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Cade in a tight hug. "Same here."

"Uh, Eddie?" Cade suddenly wondered if he'd been misunderstood.

Eddie moved back a little, watching Cade's face intently. "Yeah, Cade." Leaning in, Eddie pressed his lips against Cade's.

Relief flooded Cade and he moved his hands up Eddie's back, tangling them in his hair. Eddie groaned softly and suddenly they were on the bed, Eddie on top of Cade. The gentle pressure of the kiss changed subtly, becoming fierce, stealing Cade's breath.

An eternity later, Eddie pulled back slightly, allowing them to gasp in some much needed air.

"We good?" he asked Cade.

"Yeah, heh." Cade smiled up at Eddie. "We're good."
